Dear Engaging Guru:
I’m a Strategist and Change Agent. What innovations will change business organizations and the world economy in the next decade?
JP
A: Dear JP
The confluences of many forces lift worldwide human capital faster than at any time in history. Bellies fill, money flows, and minds expand.
Today, if you speak Mandarin, English and Spanish, you can speak to 2/3 of the world. China is about to become the number one English speaking country in the world. No longer are we a planet of babel.
Today, 50 million people / year escape poverty, but that’s only the beginning. India is now wired (or wireless). Bandwidth backbones are going down in Africa. Within 5 years, the surface of the earth will be internet enabled. WiMax-enabled devices and phones will become ubiquitous, cheap, enabling high-speed communication and learning tools for all in the 3rd world.
China just doubled the number of college graduates in 5 years. Within 10 years, online K-16 education will be free or near free through philanthropy. Fifty million more engineers and scientists will contribute to an ever accelerating body of technological advances.
New drought-resistant plants (they stop growing without water, but don’t die), spread thought the world, eliminating starvation. Nanotechnology enables solar power at ¼ the cost of coal or oil. Either DNA or nanotechnology enable the fast, inexpensive destruction of harmful-microbes in water supplies. Abundant food and cheap (non-polluting) energy, plus improvements in hygiene, increase peace and prosperity worldwide (#1 cause of human conflict is scarce resources.)
We know more about the brain in the last 5 years than in the previous 25 years. The techniques and equipment capabilities are exploding while costs are dropping. Many more PhD programs are coming online soon. We will improve learning and memory, eliminate post-traumatic stress and some depression, and prevent Alzheimer’s and autism.
Financial capital and social capital become increasingly frictionless. Micro-loans explode throughout the world to create 100s of millions of small business. A similar phenomenon happens in developed nations, taking the friction out of VC and angel investing. Money flows worldwide to wherever it creates the most value and the most good.
Finally, The Accent of HumankindBy 2018, all these forces enable two billion to move out the poverty and ignorance over the next several decades. They become consumers and producers in a truly global economy. Solopreneurs and “Empires of One” become the biggest contributors to GNPs worldwide.
One person’s idea can change the world. What happens when 100s of millions of capable people enter the world economy each year?
